Committees

There are numerous opportunities to get involved with ABA. Serving as a volunteer on an ABA committee is a great way to meet other members, network and develop new skills. Please review the committee descriptions below and contact the Chair to get involved! We welcome your participation.

Asian Business Association Committees

Membership

The ABA Membership Committee assists with the recruitment and retention of ABA members, from corporate sponsors to member business owners and even young professionals who are just beginning their careers. The Membership Committee meets monthly.  Membership Chair: Jeni Burgess (Vice Chair of Membership, ABA; Principal Relationship Manager, Wells Fargo Bank)

Government and Community Affairs

The ABA Government and Community Affairs committee reviews a variety of legislative issues and policies that may potentially impact ABA members. This committee advocates for members' business interests and engages government officials at local, state and federal levels. Representatives from the public and private sector are invited to share their views and information on policies/issues under review by the Committee. The committee is responsible for making recommendations on positions and developing action plans for the Board of Directors. The Government and Community Affairs Committee meets at noon on the first Wednesday of each month.  Government and Community Affairs Chair: Robert Ito (Chair, ABA; Principal, Ito Girard & Associates)

Annual Awards Gala

This committee coordinates the ABA's Annual Awards and Scholarship Gala. The Gala celebrates the organization’s accomplishments for the year, recognizes outstanding individuals/corporations and presents several scholarships to deserving students. The event includes a silent auction, live entertainment and an awards presentation. It's also a great networking opportunity.  The Gala committee meets monthly April through October and twice monthly beginning in August.  2015 Gala Co-Chairs: Jeni Burgess (Vice Chair of Membership, ABA; Principal Relationship Manager, Wells Fargo Bank) & Markus Achord (Director at Large, ABA; Diversity, Inclusion, & University Relations Leader, CareFusion)

The committee is responsible for making outreach to sponsors, managing invitation development, entertainment, refreshments and media relations for the event. Other logistics include outreach to San Diego dignitaries and event coordination, i.e., rentals, etc. The Lunar New Year Committee meets monthly November through February and twice monthly beginning in January.  Lunar New Year Celebration Chair: Wendy Urushima-Conn (President & CEO, ABA)

Programs:

Rice Club

ABA's monthly Rice Club luncheons allow members and attendees to listen to guest speakers, panels and candidates address issues that are important to San Diego businesses. These informational events are also an outstanding networking opportunity set in the intimate backdrop of a banquet-style Chinese meal. The Rice Club Committee’s main function is to provide attendees with an enjoyable ABA experience by meeting prominent speakers and people from business, industry and public sector.

Mixer

ABA hosts 3-4 mixers each year, which attract more than 100 people per event and provides members and prospective members with an opportunity for business networking at various exciting venues throughout San Diego County.

Seminars/Workshops

ABA sponsors 3-4 seminars and workshops each year on various business issues presented by experts in the field.  We offer programs focused on entrepreneurship, business finance, international business/trade, employment law, contracting opportunities/supplier diversity, and marketing.

Marketing

The ABA Marketing committee meets quarterly to work on strategic marketing, public relations, communication and branding. The Marketing committee is involved with projects such as the membership survey, ABA brochure, website and more. This committee is also responsible for making sure that the events and services that ABA offer align with the needs of its members.  Marketing Chair: David Kodama (Secretary, ABA; Director, Cook + Schmid)
